Description

The existing public realm in King Square is defined by hard surfaces, lack of surveillance and poor connectivity to the surrounding streets. The proposals aim to create active frontages and enhance pedestrian routes and open spaces. New homes provide front doors and activity on to new recognisable streets. Spaces between buildings are enhanced to provide attractive and overlooked gardens for residents, while improvements to thresholds to existing buildings create a cohesive urban grain. Proposed balconies are predominantly inset to mirror the existing estate.

Planning History

In early 2012, Islington Council Planning Department carried out consultation on a draft planning brief for the King Square Estate and adjoining Moreland School site. Following this, the planning brief was amended to reflect resident and local opinions and concerns. The planning brief outlined indicative areas for the new housing and school. The design for the regeneration at King Square was developed through extensive consultation with the residents, the Housing Steering Group and a detailed pre-application process with local councillors and council officers. The planning application was submitted in December 2014, and gained unanimous Planning approval in April 2015.
