Planning History
Two public consultation events were held during the design development of the project on 25 July 2011 and 7 November 2011. Both drop-in events included an exhibition of the emerging proposals and local residents and interested parties were invited to attend via letters, leaflets and posters. The principle of development was generally welcomed by the local community as the existing buildings on the site has remained unoccupied for some time and most locals acutely understood the need for new affordable housing. Concerns were expressed over the demolition of the existing building as parts of it had historical links as being a Jewish Maternity Hospital though it was not deemed worthy of listing, locally or nationally. The design team incorporated banded lettering within the brickwork and large panels with inset text at entrances to commemmorated this history, acknowledged the concerns being expressed and add an extra layer of interest to the building at pavement level. The building was also named after historic figures associated with the site.
