hoUSe
New Islington Manchester M4 6HF
Description
Prior to creating hoUSe, Urban Splash had spent many years working to lay the foundations for a community at New Islington, to date creating the Cotton Field Park, New Islington Marina and the New Islington Free School, which opened its doors for the first entry of pupils in September 2014. Since then, the community has grown, with Urban Splash and partners including Manchester City Council assisting with the delivery of other amenities including a nursery -which sits within the Chips building, an Urban Splash development in New Islington. hoUSe at New Islington is situated alongside the canal, offering a waterfront, green space community on the cusp of the city which blends urban with suburban. Urban Splash consulted with the existing community to ensure the completed development matched their expectations, rather than imposing a finalised plan on them. The goal for New Islington was to create a community from taking the existing residents as a starting point and introducing the new. Being sympathetic to the existing infrastructure was important so the two existing Victorian canals acted as boundaries, whilst the developers created a new canal through the middle of the site, opening it up and providing a real focal point.
Planning History
Urban Splash commenced work on the entire New Islington site in 2002, submitting a planning application for an outline master plan which would create an entire new community on the fringe of Manchester city centre. Subsequent planning applications have been submitted at each stage, with hoUSe granted approval in 2013.
