Description

The landscape design objectives were to create a sense of place that is embedded in the local context and site character, including a range of spaces that encourage and allow for a range of activities and social interaction. Delivery includes an ecological area with mown pathways; a sports pitch and new changing pavilion; retained and improved woodland area; a protected lawn for the use of residents; and improvements to the existing footpaths and avenues of trees to encourage walking and outdoor activities with easy, safe access to MOL.

Planning History

The hospital was opened in 1869 as a convalescent hospital and it retained this use until WWII, when it became an internationally recognised neuroscience centre. The Vacated in 2003, the site was allocated for redevelopment in the Merton Local Plan and was acquired by the developer Berkeley Homes in April 2010. Design proposals for the site have been carefully considered in relation to both local and national guidance and the previous planning permission for the site granted in 2006.
